This site is dedicated to researching the history of the Furneaux. When I started I didnt think there would be a lot to find, but to my pleasant surprise there is quite a lot really. I have organised the content in a number of ways: the default page will feature the posts in date order. Alternatively you can select from the top menu the main categories, which focus on the (in)famous Furneaux People, The Places associated with the Furneaux, and the occasional funny facts or Peculiarities, when I find them.
Each also has a set of tags, which gives a finer grained approach to the posts (e.g. under people there will eventually be posts on the Furneaux who belonged to the armed forces, or where academics, adventurers, artists, aristocrats, athletes or aesthetics). Tag cloud below
#furneaux #origins of Furneaux #where did the name Furneaux come from Aristocrats Armed Forces Artillery Cudworth Domesday Eudes Falaise Fourneaux Furnace Furnell Furnellis Furness Hastings History of Devon Justice Manche Manor Medieval Castles Medieval France Norman Norman Conquest Odo Origins of the name Furneaux Otto Tax
Motivation: Like many of us, I am curious about the origins of my family, where we come from. Knowing our history can help make sense of the present and ground our identity. However, the Furneaux are quite a diaspora with major concentrations in UK, Canada, USA and Australia.
What makes a blog like this possible is a number of digitalisation projects, such as the Open Domesday1, which enables access to original sources, as well as embedding maps, photos and other sources so that the blogs are informative, interesting, and hopefully not just plain text. Also technology such as WordPress enables publication in html for those of us, like me, who can’t program in HTML.
Style: As a pedantic academic, I am endeavouring to ensure that sources are cited, as there are many claims and counter claims made about our family on the web, and I would much rather be as accurate as possible. I have used two forms of citation. Where possible I will use direct links, where the records are available online. This will enable you to check (and possibly correct) claims made on the site, so as to be accountable. If the source is a text which is not freely available online (e.g. print only) I will use a foot note.
About me: My day job is as an academic. Please note that this blog is a personal endeavour, and is in no way associated with, nor endorsed by, my employer. I am also an avid amateur history buff who believes that we have much to learn from history.
